Mentoring is a primary mission and core value of PPALM. The concept is to capitalize on the wisdom and insights of role models and/or experienced individuals, who are committed to supporting the development and success of associates or members (possible mentees) of a group, organization or profession. It is the principal means for the organization and its members to share encourage and inculcate the professional values and attributes associated with being a successful leader (military or civilian) and contributor to society. The goal is to develop desired and necessary values, attributes and skills, in those providing mentorship and those receiving and benefiting from it.
A mentor is someone who has achieved personal, professional and career success, offers the wisdom of his/her experiences, provides guidance, encouragement and feedback and helps the mentee develop skills to achieve his/her full potential. A mentor acts as a role model to advise and counsel individuals who are seeking to improve themselves, and who are interested in a particular field of expertise, while focusing on the strengths and potentials of mentees rather their limitations.
The PPALM Mentorship Program is intended to complement the Army Mentorship Program and assist the Army in developing and maintaining highly competent current and future Army leaders to serve the Nation. This program is a means to achieve the identified goal. It is not the only way the program will work. This program strives for the following benefits:
The purpose of the Mentorship Program is to capitalize on the experience base and knowledge of professionals and role models willing to volunteer their time to share their knowledge and expertise with mentees. It is a collaborative relationship in which both parties gain personally in ways that benefit the organization.
Selection and assignment of a mentor and the mentoring process to be used will be based on the current learning needs of the mentee. Given the nature of our profession, the mentoring process may be conducted face-to-face or using a wide range of media capabilities and the mentor and mentee by mutual consent will decide what process to use. Both the mentor and the mentee have the option to evaluate the relationship and request change based on mutual agreement.
